Radio Boise to Launch New Downtown Frequency on 93.5 FM
RADIO BOISE PREPARES TO BROADCAST SECOND FREQUENCY WITH NEW DOWNTOWN TRANSLATOR AT 93.5 FM
Boise, ID (October 4) – Less than two years after launching the Treasure Valley’s first independent, noncommercial, community-programmed radio station on KRBX 89.9 FM, Radio Boise will begin broadcasting on a second frequency, 93.5 FM, providing more robust coverage to Boise’s downtown area and neighborhoods in the northern and eastern fringes of its service area.
The new channel, “93.5 Downtown”, will be transmitted from the US Bank Building, Idaho’s tallest structure, by October 22. An additional 121,000 people will now be within the area of Radio Boise’s strongest broadcast signal. The station’s “city-grade” service area will expand by over 50%, from 227,000 people to over 350,000.
“Because much of Boise’s population is near a floodplain, we knew, early on, that many low-lying areas near town probably wouldn’t get perfect reception”, said General Manager Jeff Abrams. “We made a promise to our listeners that we’d work hard to overcome this obstacle, and with our new channel at 93.5 FM, we feel really good about now being able to deliver the best possible signal to these trouble spots”.
Radio Boise has teamed up with Unico Properties, owners of the US Bank Building, to site the new 93.5 FM repeater in the most desirable location in the entire Valley.
“A transmitter on a 267 foot tower, right in the heart of the city, should give our listeners a beautiful signal to receive Radio Boise’s programming if they live, work or commute within a 2 or 3-mile radius of downtown”, said Abrams. The station will celebrate the new facility with a special ceremony on top of the US Bank Building on Monday, October 22.
Radio Boise has just re-tooled their weekly broadcast schedule and the nonprofit organization is planning their third bi-annual fund-drive for October 24-November 1. “Fall Radiothon 2012″ will feature special programming and in-studio guests from throughout the community with the goal of raising $45,000 from 900 new and renewing supporters. Proceeds from “Radiothon” will be dedicated to the broadcast expenses for the next six months.
Radio Boise’s schedule focuses on a wide variety of music shows programmed by residents of the Treasure Valley, weekly public affairs shows, live interviews with local and touring musicians, and public service announcements serving the area’s nonprofit community. Recently, and for the second straight year, Radio Boise was voted second-best local radio station by Boise Weekly readers.
Radio Boise’s area of service covers almost 500,000 people and spans over 3,000 square miles. In addition to the terrestrial broadcast, their internet broadcast can be heard on the web (including mobile devices) at www.radioboise.org.
