KRBX News Experience

Have you ever wanted to be a reporter? Do you have a juicy news story to pitch? An epic neighborhood struggle. A beautiful, yet misunderstood local character. An old-fashioned political scandal.

The Radio Boise News Experience is an inspiring new exercise in community journalism for Southwest Idaho. We need to find, train, and hang out with people like you who are interested in telling the stories of our community.

News Experience II starts May 26 when we’ll ALL be the media.

  • - You bring the ideas — pitch a story or join another reporting team.
  • - We’ll provide the tools and training to produce the stories and get them on the air.

The first Radio Boise News Experience aired on Wednesday 5/2. Listen to the broadcast here.

More about The News Experience

The News Experience will train prospective community journalists like you to pitch stories, gather background information, develop sources, conduct interviews, work as a news team, write scripts, collect and edit sound and anchor programs.

The goal is to have graduates of the News Experience ultimately form the core of Radio Boise’s Community News Department as we develop it throughout 2012, bringing a new urgency to the Boise Valley media landscape.

When: We’ll hold a series of kick-ass training events in neighborhoods, community centers and schools across the Boise Valley throughout 2012.

    • News Experience 1 is March 10, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the North End – 1520 N. 12th St. (church meeting space).
    • News Experience 2 will be held May 26 on the Boise Bench … and we’ll be coming to a venue near you later this year

Who: Enthusiastic future radio reporters, producers and anchors: we need you to start digging, folks. Bring your ideas and the tools of your trade: pens, pencils, notebooks, laptops, smart phones and any digital recording equipment you might have (we’ll have recorders and computers for you to use as well). RSVP here, if possible, or else just show up at the event!

What: Come prepared to “pitch” a story* or to roll up your sleeves and start collaborating with other citizen journalists. You’ll participate in a Journalism 101 workshop and then start working on a team radio report, conduct real interviews, set some deadlines and eventually hear your story on Radio Boise – KRBX – 89.9 FM.

*What’s a pitch? Tell us what the story is, why it deserves wider attention and why you’re the right person to report it (along with your team).

Why: Part of Radio Boise’s mission is to democratize the local media landscape by giving a voice to unrepresented or underrepresented members of our community, and providing programming that creates a healthier level of information, discourse and community identity to strengthen cultural health and community identity. Community radio is all about taking back the mic from the corporations and gatekeepers that control our information channels and set the agenda. This is our chance to be the media that we want.

*Sustenance:  We will provide high-energy victuals and beverages throughout the morning. No-host happy hour to follow at location TBD.

*Questions?:  Hit us up on Facebook, Twitter, email or phone: 208.258.2072
